Mastering your Fall to Winter wardrobe transition
Besides having a Winter complexion myself, Winter is my favourite season. The stillness, the quiet ambience, and the contrast of colours against snow make me feel inspired and at peace. However, few agree with me. In my experience with styling work, I found the reason many people don’t enjoy winter is because they struggle with clothing. Another thing I love about the coldest months is the added levels of creativity you can work into your outfits. Today, we’ll dive into how you can dominate winter styling with grace and poise.
With all the leaves of fall on the ground, and the first cold breeze of winter in the air, you feel it’s time for a change of wardrobe. The transition from fall to winter is not just about staying warm. Although that is a big part of it, it is also about matching style with functionality.
Understanding layering techniques
The secret to a smooth transition from fall to winter is layering. That makes the recipe for a fascinating and stylish wardrobe as follows:
Base layer: start with essentials like lightweight thermals, long-sleeve shirts, or cotton turtlenecks. These are my thermal underwear the first layer of insulation, they don't make you look big but they keep you warm.
Middle layer: then the medium layers, cardigans, light sweaters, flannel shirts, etc. They also provide warmth and flexibility as the temperature changes during the course of the day.
Outer layers: your outer layer is your statement piece. Be it a sherpa-lined one for that nice warm comfy feeling, a parka for the heavy snow days, or a trench coat for rainy days. Whatever it is, it better have a classic design in a neutral colour that suits you.
Essential transitional pieces
Jacket: invest in a good jacket that not only insulates but also repels water. It will be your staple during those harsh winter days.
Scarves: it goes from an accent piece in the fall to a necessity in the winter, a thick wool scarf will add a colourful twist to your outfit and at the same time keep you warm.
Footwear: swap out your loafers for insulated boots. Whether you opt for classic leather boots for a touch of sophistication or rugged hiking/snow boots for outdoor activities, your feet need to stay both warm and dry.
Textures and accessories
Embrace the season with materials like cashmere, wool, and fur (natural or faux). Not only do they provide the best insulation, but they add a rich feel to your clothes.
Think bulky and warm accessories. Mittens, earmuffs and thick wool scarves, will not only keep you warm, but they also help to add a personal touch to your outfits.
The move from fall to winter is an easy one once you know how to layer, what type of fabrics to wear, and how to accessorize. From these tips you can create a wardrobe that not only will provide you warmth during winter, but makes you look good in the process. Keep in mind that winter fashion is all about being bold yet cozy, so show your true colours in your many layers!
